STRIKE

Curated by Gavin Wade

Exhibition Invitation.

I would like to invite you to present a texts work within STRIKE, at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, which will run from September 14th - November 9th 2002.

I would like you to answer or respond to the 2 questions below.

1. How does/could/would the withdrawal of art affect the world?

2. Does the answer to the first question reveal ways that art can affect the world or strike a blow on the structures of the world?

I need to receive your work before August 1st 2002. Please contact me to let me know you will or will not contribute.

My intentions are to present works and ideas which speculate on or document the withdrawal or loss of art in order to ask whether we can clearly define or redefine roles and process's of art within world structure. The main mode of work within the exhibition will be textsual.

STRIKE will run concurrently with a retrospective of Conrad Atkinson's work. Atkinson made a work for the ICA in 1972 called Strike At Brannans utilising existing documentation of the workers strike at a Thermometer Factory in Cleator Moor.

The Wolverhampton Art Gallery is Wolverhampton's civic gallery/museum opened in 1884 and has a classic faÁade with columns. The gallery space has a relief frieze running around the top of the walls.

There are no limitations on the length of your texts. If you have specific formats for your work in mind, ie font, colour, size, material, then let me know or otherwise you can simply supply me with your texts by e-mail.

Each work will be placed within the gallery according to individual requirements and in relation to an overall structure which will evolve in response to the works.

I have invited Liam Gillick to collaborate with me on the exhibition design. I am interested in converting the gallery space, very simply, so that the space may read like a design layout in a book as well as guiding the viewer through the physical space.

The main form of artworks may be Vinyl texts applied directly to surfaces within the gallery. For this purpose I may construct completely new walls within the space.

Please call me or e-mail me if you have any queries, tactics or suggestions.

I look forward to your response

Yours sincerely

GAVIN WADE
