Archeology of the Future / The Future Under Communism

Group show curated by Alex Farquharson, Lukasz Ronduda and Michal Wolinski.
Fall 2009 (TBA)
This exhibition considers how the future was imagined under communism during the Cold War. It does so mainly through the works of a generation of leading artists who grew up within the Soviet sphere of influence, but who became artists after its demise. They are shown alongside important figures of the Central and East European avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s. That era dominates much of the contemporary work as well – references to now obsolete technology of that era, its science fiction and its space programme, abound – because, in the words of our co-curators, Lukasz Ronduda and Michal Wolinski, this was the last time people living in Warsaw Pact countries believed in the future. That belief was tied to an abiding conviction that Soviet-style communism would one day deliver on its promise of a utopian society, and that present day struggles and privations were necessary steps towards a prosperous, just and egalitarian society. Since then, these dreams have been dismantled, both by the repressive measures of communist regimes in their final years, and as a consequence of the dramatic transformation towards Western-style capitalist democracy.
In collaboration with Ujazdowski Castle CCA Warsaw where the exhibition till be held in early 2010.

Locus athens invited seven artists to explore with their projects both the nostalgia and ephemeral pleasures of holidays as well as the utopian basis but also cynical strategies of the tourist industry. Organized Movement - A video diary

Solo show.
During the summer of 2004, Aleksandra Mir took part in Localismos, a month-long artists’ residency in Mexico City. Wanting to respond to her environment without masquerading as a neutral observer, Mir took Latin dance lessons and attended traditional dance performances. She recorded the results in Organized Movement – A Video Diary (2004). The video juxtaposes footage of the artist as absolute beginner with anecdotal observations about youth culture, night life, group dynamics, globalization and the embarrassment of learning from scratch. With its pseudo-education voiceover and diaristic style, Organized Movement enacts the values of inclusiveness, improvisation and collaboration that underline Mir’s work in numerous genres. The film also suggests how new political or social movements come into being. As Mir explains, “Taking community as a starting point for spontaneous movement—where everyone is a welcome interpreter and contributor, the best thing happens, new dances are born.” Organized Movement is the first of Mir’s projects to be exhibited in Canada.

The Starry Messenger: Visions of the Universe

Group show curated by John Leslie with John Cage, John Flamsteed, Graham Gussin, David Hardy, William Kentridge, Steve McQueen, Aleksandra Mir, Ivan and Heather Morison, John Murphy, John Russell, Bridget Smith, Wolfgang Tillmans, Fred Tomaselli, Paul McDevitt and Mark Tichner.
In 1610 Galileo viewed the sky through a newly invented telescope and his observations marked a major turning point in the way we view the world. The Starry Messenger looks at artists' visions of the Universe and its continuing role on the imagination. The exhibition begins with Galileo's book, Sidereus Nuncius (The Starry Messenger), and his subsequent meeting with the poet John Milton, as described in the epic poem Paradise Lost. The exhibition explores the dreams and imagination of a Western culture through the visionary paintings of William Blake, John Martin and Odilon Redon, via the utopian worlds and dilemmas posed by science fiction, to contemporary works that question mans knowledge of life on earth.
The Starry Messenger is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, with a specially commissioned essay by the acclaimed science fiction writer Brian Aldiss.

Publish and be Damned

Initiated by Kit Hammonds and Emily Pethick
A Public Library dedicated to self-publishing, the archive surveys individual approaches to making and distributing the work of artists, writers and musicians outside of the commercial mainstream, profiling experimental editorial directions. Initiated at Cubitt, London in July 2004, Publish and be Damned was launched with a one-day Self-Publishing Fair, which brought together a range of self-publishers from the UK and Europe. Much of the material that was presented at the fair is included in the Public Library archive, alongside a wide variety of international publications that were sourced through the informal networks that make up the self-publishing scene.

The Public Library is continuing to tour to artist-run spaces in the UK and Europe during 2005, and the second Self-Publishing Fair will take place in London on 31 July 2005.

Communism
group show curated by Grant Watson
For the exhibition Communism a group of artists will be commissioned to respond to this term and consider its contemporary relevance. The term Communism (which means a system based on the common ownership of property) can be approached in a number of ways. It can be addressed in relation to art production and dissemination and to the structures that facilitate or control these processes. It can be looked at as a social system, which according to ones perspective, has either failed or still contains utopian potential. It can be seen as a critique of capitalism in its current form. It can be explored as a political folklore, or as the progenitor of art movements such as Constructivism and of posters, murals and avant -garde film. The enormous scope of this subject precludes any systematic or definitive approach. Instead the project will be structured as an ad hoc archive and potentially as an ongoing process.

Terminal 5 is an event for air travel. The airport terminal designed by Eero Saarinen at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York, was left vacant in 2001. The site reopens with an exhibition curated by Rachel K. Ward to respond to the transitory nature of travel, architecture and contemporary art. Localismos
20 Artists Working In The Center Of Mexico City A Global Collaboration For A Local Strategy.
Localismos, a project by Perros Negros, is a residential workshop in which a group of 20 artists, Mexicans and foreigners, will work for a month in the center of Mexico City. At the end of this month, the artists will produce a series of works, which have as only condition, to be made with materials and craftsmanship available in the historical center so that from its conception, production and exhibition there is a coherent dialogue with the context.

The Outlaw Series 2003
presented by Lisa Kirk
Inspired by New York's pre-Giuliani era Outlaw Parties, which were entirely illegal events taking place throughout the NY Metro area in the mid 1980s, this Guerilla-style exhibition features works that are placed, performed, installed or simply occurring in unorthodox settings. Without the aid of commercial or public institutions, the artists participating in the Outlaw Series take the questions of context, economy, time and meaning into their own hands, embracing the freedom of dissent that creativity thrives upon. In this spirit of alternatives to more conventional exhibitions and exhibition spaces, all of the artists listed below have proposed radical approaches to contemporary art making and installation.

SITUATIONS: Contemporary Art and the Question of Context is a University of the West of England research initiative in association with Arnolfini. This two-year programme of research is a critical response to broadening notions of site specificity and context in the commissioning and production of art works and consequently, the implications for art institutions and their programmes. Led by Research Fellow, Claire Doherty, it combines an international lecture series, conference, publications and commissioned projects with extensive field research to provide a new critical discourse for arts practitioners and commissioners nationally and internationally. The project launches in October with part one of the lecture series featuring artists, critics and curators including Thomas Hirschhorn, Kathrin Bohm, Nathan Coley, Jimmie Durham, Maria Lind, Minerva Cuevas and NicolasBourriaud. A publication of the lecture series will be available in Spring 2004.
