Conspiracy Night

Conspiracy Night, Invitation flyer, 1999.

In November 1999, Annette Schindler organized an exhibition at the Swiss Institute entitled ‘Empires without States: Notions of Success and Failure in Contemporary Art’. This was also the premiere venue for the screening on the moon landing tape, which the institute had co-funded the production of. We decided to stage an event around the screening, which would deal with the rumors of conspiracy around the original moon landing. After a public call on a variety of Internet newsgroups, we identified and invited conspiracy theorist Conrado Salas from London. Conrado gave an intense talk, pointing out all the reasons why the original could never have happened. This gave us the opportunity to compare the two moon landings on aesthetic grounds, as parallel performance events, 30 years apart. Conrado Salas further advised me to send the tapes to Neil Armstrong in Ohio and Arthur C. Clarke in Columbo. Two years later I did, and got cheery replies from them both.
