World clock drawings, 2002-ongoing.

I made a first set of these drawings for my own studio, and to ease my dislocation, when in residence at the Sydney Biennale, April–May 2002. The Australians who visited me there said it eased theirs too. Upon my return to NYC, I made a new set of drawings for each of the three galleries I was working with that year: Gavin Brown’s enterprise, NEW YORK; greengrassi gallery, LONDON; Jousse Entreprise, PARIS. The clocks helped them keep track of me, each other and their international trade.

A year later, a set of clocks came up in the lobby of the ICA, London, and another set was made for my show ‘Welcome Back to Earth’ at Kunsthalle St. Gallen. The clocks at the ICA caused some turmoil in negotiations with the administration who were first reluctant about them, fearing they would truly confuse their audiences. The St. Gallen clocks were donated to that institution for a fundraiser. They hung in director Gianni Jetzer’s curatorial office for some months before they were auctioned off, and they eventually found their way to the corporate headquarters of Ringier, Zurich.

The project is ongoing. These days, every office in the world could use one set of world clocks.
