Aleksandra Mir

Aleksandra Mir's first solo exhibition at Galerie Laurent Godin presents her ongoing dialogue with old friends and new acquaintences as she performs her life of a stranger in constant confrontation with foreign Societies, where her negotiations, trials and errors continuously create new forms of cultural expression.

'Organized Movement', A 55min video diary shot during her first ever visit to Mexico City and Latin America in 2004, describes the non-Spanish speaking artists attempts to connect with local people and Mexican customs through the body language of dance. As the story unfolds, the monologue touches on everything from globalization, alienation, class struggle, revolution and food, to classic ballet, sex, crime and rockn' roll.

Complementary to the video screening in the gallery are also exhibited related ephemera, documentary, materials and new works created especially for the presentation in Paris. Flyers for no longer existing clubs and past performances or long forgotten parties are combined with notices for dance classes one can still attend, in Mexico City. The classic poster of Che Guevara adorned with the defunct Concorde flying overhead contemplates the lost potency of both, while infusing new energy to two of the most powerful images of our times.

On her opening night, Aleksandra Mir has invited Lasser Moderna, a Mexican band that appears in her film to perform live here in Paris. Lasser Moderna was created by artist Adriana Lara and musician Emilio Acevedo in 2002. They started off from a great admiration for Cumbia music (a genre originating in Colombia) an instrumental mix of organ, guitars, accordion, bass and deep tone percussions accompanies the love, hope and despair stories of common people. After their hit "La cumbia del estereo!, Lasser Moderna has been integrating very different references into a musicalization that includes: synthesizers, electronic sounds, percussions and a musical score charged of vocal harmonies and chaotic melodies; all together combined into an undefined genre, dark but comforting, that attempts to make a contribution to the cumbia legacy.
