part of Pursuit of Perfection: The Politics of Sport
South London Gallery, London
South London Gallery’s ‘Pursuit of Perfection’ explores the politics surrounding sports and its media representation.
Unlike many of the shows currently filling London’s exhibition spaces, the South London Gallery’s 'Pursuit of Perfection' explores the politics surrounding sports and its representation in the media.
Triumph (2009) is a display of 2,529 trophies dating from the 1940s to today, collected over the course of a year by the Polish-born artist Aleksandra Mir. The installation, says Mir, reflects “our tendency towards nostalgia, and the temptation to dwell on memories of past youth, vitality and joy”.
Other works on show include a disorientating sound piece by Janice Kerbel based on a baseball commentary, and Ariel Orozco’s photograph of a stray dog tattooed to look like a football.
